Raelyia was born into the renowned Harpell family, though a distant cousin to the main branch. Rae's talents diverged from the traditional wizardry the Harpells were known for, and from a young age, Rae exhibited strange abilities: she could see spirits and communicate with the unseen. This caused her to become increasingly isolated, as her peers found her unsettling, and her family did not know how to handle her growing affinity for death and the undead.
She was sent to the Ivy Mansion in Longsaddle, and there she was surrounded by eccentric, powerful wizards. Her affinity for necromancy became clearer the more she studied. But rather than following the dark path of most necromancers, Rae's magic was focused on healing, balance, and the respectful treatment of spirits.
Upon researching, she discovered the more compassionate, life-affirming fringe form of necromancy that some dubbed "White Necromancy."
Instead of controlling the dead for power, Rae seeks to restore balance: to heal the wounded, to reconnect severed limbs, to rebuke death's grip, to talk with spirits for guidance, and to help souls find their peace. Despite its potential for healing, her choice of magical discipline draws suspicion because necromancy is so heavily associated with dark forces.
Rae is quiet and often goes unnoticed in a room, not by choice, but because of her tendency to keep to herself. She avoids making eye contact and prefers observing people and situations rather that participating in them. She comes off as distant, shy, and unsure. While her intentions are pure, her discomfort with social interaction makes her come off as eerie to others. She always means well, offering to help where she can, though her mannerisms can feel unsettling, especially when she speaks of death and the undead. Despite her oddness, Rae is deeply empathetic. Her bond with spirits and undead has instilled in her an understanding of both life and death. She's often found comforting others in times of grief, but her way of doing so is unique—often through strange, cryptic words and small gestures others may not understand.
Rae has a dry sense of humor that she often hides behind her awkwardness. If you can get past her reticence, she can be unexpectedly witty, though she has a tendency to laugh nervously after a joke lands.
White Necromancy: Rae has mastered a unique form of necromantic magic that focuses on healing and balance. She can:
Spirit Whisperer: Rae has a natural connection with spirts, ghosts, and souls of the departed. She often speaks to them, although no one else can hear their responses. This makes her seem even more peculiar to others.
Magic of Balance: Rae's approach to magic is fundamentally about maintaining the natural balance between life, death, and undeath. Her spells often take a defensive or restorative form. While other wizards focus on destruction or manipulation, Rae's magic seeks harmony.
Rae seeks to find a way to be accepted for who she is, both by her family and by the larger magical community. She's dedicated to proving that necromancy can be used for good, for healing, and for maintaining balance in the world.
