Summary

A dollmaker turned alchemist torn between the rationality of a scholar and the madness of a grieving husband. His mind, though sharp and inquisitive, is fractured by years of sorrow and obsession. He is often lost in thought, speaking in fragmented sentences as if his mind is constantly elsewhere at times, reliving memories of his husband or contemplating the dark arts he has embraced. When Dominic is actively mentally present, he is prideful bordering on arrogant which tends to rub others the wrong way. He is morally grey, his moral compass skewed but he is not an evil man by any means.

The pure love that Dominic has for VII is tinged with regret and guilt, seeing him as both a living reminder of his failure and the only remaining connection to the love he once had. His interactions with the boy are marked by a melancholic tenderness, as he struggles with the knowledge that his creation can never truly be what he desires.

Story

Lord Alchemist Dominic Kennedy hails noble family that earned their wealth from the mines. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, anything and everything he ever desired was in his grasp except for the acceptance of his family. He found love and acceptance in another: a close friend named Devereux, the son of the affluent Marchand family, dressmakers and jewelers. As they grew older, friendly feelings developed into much more and they became bonded as lovers. Dominic spent his years as a young man by Devereux's side, forgoing the responsibilities of running the famiy's affairs and working as a dollmaker. They live happily until a mysterious illness claims the life of his husband.

Shortly after this, Dominic's father passes away as well from the same plague. He inherits his family's wealth and the title of Lord of the manor as the only Kennedy son. Stricken with grief and obsessed with the idea of resurrecting Devereux, Dominic delved into forbidden knowledge, experimenting with dark alchemy, blood rituals, and the creation of homunculi. Unwilling to deal with the affairs of the Kennedy silver business, he puts his research into practice and created golems to work the mines. In time, he isolates himself not only through his own choice but also by his family turning away from him as a result of dabbling in the Void. This leaves him quite soured to the idea of family, and this feeling of abandon was further deepened in his heart.

In a fit of despair and unfathomingly deep grief, Dominic breaks the Alchemist Code and tries to ressurect his lover and changes his life forever. VII, the homunculus created in Devereux's image, was the culmination of years of relentless experimentation—a beautiful, yet tragic, reflection of his lost love.

Dominic's character arc ends with him finally finding peace with Devereux's death, packing up his dolls at the manor, and moving away to America.
